ULVERSTON is celebrating after being named a Fair Trade town to help disadvantaged traders across the world.

Thanks to the efforts of a community group, Bay Sustainability Action Group, or BaySAG, the town will soon join the likes of Kendal, which achieved Fair Trade status three years ago.

Mary Searle-Chatterjee, from the group that promotes social and environmental issues in the community, has been campaigning for the move since late last year.

Speaking on Monday, she confirmed a panel from Fair Trade had agreed that the town was worthy of the prestigious mark.
