HUNDREDS of shoppers in Kendal showed their support for a campaign to help save the world's future, reports Daniel Orr.
Thanks to the efforts of South Lakeland World Development Movement (SLWDM), many people put their names and addresses on postcards that will be sent to Prime Minister Tony Blair in a bid to put more pressure on the Government to address the urgent issue of climate change.
Group members, who spoke to passers-by at the Birdcage at Finkle Street and at Stricklandgate on Saturday, aim to make Kendal a carbon neutral' town by making people more aware of the need to reduce the amount of energy they use and investing in other carbon reduction projects.
Saturday's event came a day after the publication of a United Nations report, compiled by hundreds of international scientists, which said there was "at least a nine out of ten chance" that human behaviour, mainly C02 emissions and burning of fossil fuels, was the cause of climate change.
