LAKE District farmers are being invited to join two projects that could help increase numbers of some of the UK's birds.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds first launched its Volunteer and Farmer Alliance Project in 1999 to provide farmers with a free, confidential and no-obligation survey of the birds on their farm.

The RSPB is now offering Volunteer and Farmer Alliance bird surveys to farms in Cumbria to tie in with the launch of a brand new tree sparrow project called Operation Tree Sparrow (Cumbria).

The project aims to work with farmers, whose land may already be supporting populations of tree sparrows but could potentially support much bigger populations with a few simple land management changes.

Project officer Catriona Glendinning will be working with farmers to advise them on simple changes that could help boost sparrow numbers.

The RSPB is also on the lookout for new volunteers to help carry out the Volunteer and Farmer Alliance farm surveys.
