VISITORS to Cumbria from overseas are staying longer and spending more, a new survey has revealed. According to the International Passenger Survey, foreign travellers made 210,000 visits to the county in 2005, 3.4 per cent more than in 2004. The number of overnight stays spent in the county also rocketed by 21.1 per cent to more than 1.4 million. The visitor boom is also good news for Cumbria's economy as foreign tourists are also spending more - in 2005, overseas visitor spending rose to £58 million from £51 million in 2004. Chief executive of VisitBritain Tom Wright said: "This tourism earnings growth is fantastic news for the Cumbrian economy and provides a real foundation for future growth."
