The Rev Michael Thistlewood, a former hospital chaplain, said: “Most people would agree that we need centres of excellence for particular medical conditions. However it does not follow from this that everything else should be closed down.
"The surgery that is done at the Westmorland and the other services it provides are taking pressure off other hospitals in the region which are already overloaded.”
