MOBILE phone users dodge cigarettes in an innovative new app promoting healthy living which has been designed by a 13-year-old Ulverston student.
Harry Tate’s entry was among 100 submitted to organisers NHS Cumbria after they set youngsters a challenge to come up with a smart way to get health messages to young people.
After impressing a panel of 12 judges – including six youngsters – with his idea, Harry scooped the prize to have his game brought to life and has proudly showed off his winning app to friends at Ulverston Victoria High School.
Called Healthrunner, Harry’s free app contains facts warning young people about the dangers of smoking and tips for a healthier lifestyle.
Harry said: “It is a game that shows the dangers of smoking and the importance of eating healthily. The game has a side-on view of a stick man or woman, running, and the aim to dodge the cigarettes by jumping over or sliding under them.”
To encourage young people to use the app and be more aware of health issues, NHS Cumbria is now running a competition to win a new tablet computer.
Until Easter, anyone who logs a high score from the healthrunner game at www.cumbriapartnership. nhs.uk stands a chance of winning.
* Healthrunner is available now to download for iPhones and iPads from the app store.
