WALKERS slipping and falling in snow and ice on the fells resulted in mountain rescue teams being called out to two incidents yesterday.

Members of Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team went to the aid of a man from Wigan who had dislocated his shoulder while descending Fleetwith Pike in Buttermere.

He was treated at the scene by a team doctor before being lowered to a location by stretcher from where a Navy helicopter from Prestwich was able to pick him up and take him to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.

Another walker sustained injuries to his elbow and ribs when he slipped on ice and snow on Pillar. His fall resulted in a long slide down the mountain.

He was carried off the fell by members of the Cockermouth team assisted by volunteers from Wasdale MRT and the RAF Leeming team who were in the area at the time yesterday afternoon.W
