Caroline Barber’s 13th Queen Katherine School production culminated in a standing ovation at every single show.
The performance of the musical score was definitely one of the strengths of this production. Musical director, Robert Shillitoe, took the helm on his first major QKS production – with stunning results. Similarly, the chorus, choreographed en masse by Emma Lockley, were clearly enjoying themselves in all their thigh-slapping, toe-tapping glory.
Oliver played by year seven student Edward Brownell was fabulous casting. His rendition of Where Is Love?, left a tear in my eye. It has been quite an experience watching Emily Baxter (Nancy), grow in theatrical stature as she has moved through the school, rightfully winning her place at the National Youth Theatre this summer alongside her talented brother Elliot (the Artful Dodger) and equally talented Joelle Campbell, who injected so much humour into the part of Widow Corney.
Aine Nettleton stood out as Charlotte, as did the deliciously eccentric Mike Rhodes (Mr Sowerberry) and the amazing voice on Andrew Turner (Mr Bumble), whilst Mattie Barber’s (Bill Sykes) entrance song was powerful – indeed scary.
Kevin Bell (Fagin) looked and sounded the part and acting and make-up were brilliant.
All in all then – a resounding success. Oliver certainly left me wanting more.
