SOUTH Lakeland rock heroes British Sea Power are set to play an exciting Olympic gig on the shores of Windermere.
The popular band will entertain spectators at the free Welcoming The Olympic Flame spectacular on Thursday, June 21, at The Glebe in Bowness.
Band leaders and brothers Neil and Scott Wilkinson grew up in Natland and met drummer Matthew Wood at Kirkbie Kendal School, Kendal, before going on to receive international acclaim with five albums.
In a tongue-in-cheek statement, the band said: “It is all free of charge and BSP could not say no to booming out over the waters of Windermere in their native Cumbria. BSP are set to play a 10-minute step-aerobics medley to coincide with the arrival of the Olympic torch.
“BSP are also set to play a separate 25-minute set to conclude the musical part of the evening. With, apparently, a potential audience of 10,000, could this be the optimum sports/rock fusion since Right Said Fred kicked opened the 2008 World Cup in front of the Brandenburg Gate?”
As part of the programme for the evening, which is being organised by Lakes Alive, one of the opening acts of the forthcoming London 2012 festival, On the Night Shift, featuring ‘streams of colour and light’.
It is the brand new commission from French pyrotechnic wizards Les Commandos Percu who wowed audiences at Mintfest and Maryport in 2010 and have a worldwide reputation their productions.
