MUSIC industry bigwigs are laying siege to Kendal next week with a huge event that no aspiring musician or manager, performer or promoter ought to miss, writes Matt Simms.

The Orange: MissionMusic convention will see the biggest names from the business descend on the town, with anyone interested being given the opportunity to quiz them on all aspects of musical production.

Spread over the two days will be various meetings, debates and workshops, with experienced musicians and music workers giving advice on all aspects of popular music, from the craft of songwriting to the staging of a live gig.

Would-be artists will be able to receive advice from such luminaries as Tom Hingley, frontman of The Inspiral Carpets.

There will also be discussions into how popular music can be developed in Cumbria, with industry figures looking to explore ideas of how to improve and expand the local scene.

Record company A&R, managers and publishers will be on hand to offer their views on what exactly it is that they are looking for.

One of the highlights will undoubtedly be the demo jury, with local bands and soloists getting constructive feedback, from professionals with a wealth of experience, on their demos.

To round it all off, new talent from across the county will be showcased at a series of gigs across the two nights, at two different venues in the town.

In the Malt Room at the Brewery Arts Centre there will be live band performances by the likes of Seven Seals, Call of Duty, and Kyra, whereas at the Vats bar there is an array of acoustic shows by such artists as Andreas, Ali Rigg and Steve McCormick.

The event takes place on Wednesday, Oct 21, and Thursday, Oct 22, and is completely free, but registration is vital. To do so, please ring Jo on 0191-2450099, or go to jo@generator.org.uk.
