Distinctive and very much contemporary, there is no doubt that the work of the latest two additions to the Green Door Studio membership are bound to raise a few eyebrows.

AsArt is Paul Macfarlane and Jenny Wroe, who work independently of each other, but share the same studio space within GDS's Kendal home.

Jenny recently graduated from Liverpool's John Moores University with a degree in fine art and Paul was a primary school teacher at Temple Sowerby School, before he received his creative calling.

After returning from cycling across America earlier this year they decided to team up as a visual arts company AsArt, launching them on an unsuspecting world.

Being bold and adventurous is a necessary ingredient in the melting pot of artistic endeavour and they've made an immediate impression landing a runners-up award in the Brewery Open with their melange of picturesque postcards bedecked by naked ladies Landscape 1-36.

But are they not pushing the envelope a little to far, sticking nude pictures on the top of Lake District views in the name of art?

"It's more concept than skill," replies Paul thoughtfully.

"Landscapes and women - two attractive things brought together and seeing what you get out of it," adds Jenny.

Together they strive to produce a mix of humorous and serious work, packaged in colourful blown-on abstracts, themed mixed media collages and printed on canvass images such as Death by Carrots. "People are paranoid about what they can eat and what they can't," Jenny points out.

Not intending to be controversial, they aim to be more thought provoking, showing a social conscience in Bling. "I got the impression at John Moores that you weren't there to paint pretty pictures but trying to change the world. I think that's influenced me," says Jenny, somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

As well as work at Kendal's Eclectic, at Kirkland, and the Shoes on Fences installation at Devil's Bridge, AsArt work is exhibited alongside other Green Door Artists at Grasmere Village Hall from tomorrow (Saturday) until October 17.

AsArt is also available for commissions and residencies and can be contacted on 01539-721147 or 07793-710427.
