SHAP Memorial Hall is host to Robert Chafe's Tempting Providence The Nurse Myra Bennett Story, staged by the highly imaginative and inventive Canadian theatre company, Theatre Newfoundland, Labrador, on Sunday (7.30pm). The play is a story of courage and strength about British trained nurse and midwife Myra Grimsley, known as the Florence Nightingale of the North, who arrived in Newfoundland in 1921 from her native London after hearing of the desperate need for her work in rural communities. She was one of the first group of out-port nurses, travelling by foot, horse, dogsled and boat in all kinds of weather along the rugged Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland. The production is part of the Highlights rural touring scheme.
Directed by Jillian Keiley, winner of the Canada Council's 1997 John Hirsch Prize and the 1996 Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council's Emerging Artist of the Year Award, it is billed as a wonderful, heartfelt portrayal' of Nurse Bennett. Bringing theatre back to its roots of simple storytelling, Tempting Providence has attracted worldwide attention, touring not only in Canada but also in the UK and Ireland.
