SEDBERGH School's CCF Band and Drums were awarded the unique honour of being invited to play the long reveille at the Menin Gate, Ypres. Bandmaster Alan Lewis and the 47 musicians were on an end of term trip to Belgium when they were awarded the role exclusively reserved for the local trumpeters. The Menin Gate is a large war memorial to remember the soldiers who fell in the First World War and the Last Post is played every day without fail. The Sedbergh band played to a crowd of about 5,000 people while four wreaths were laid in honour of seven old Sedberghians whose names are commemorated at the gate.
THE Kandinsky Piano Trio will be performing at Victoria Hall, Grange-over-Sands, on Friday, September 10. Katya Apekisheva will play the piano, Fenella Barton the violin and Stephen Buck the cello. The trio plays concerts all over the world and has been described as "talented and decisive". Tickets will be priced at £10 for non-members, £9 for members and students can go free. The concert will start at 7.30pm.
CARTMEL Priory will be hosting a flower festival running from September 3 to 6 between 10am and 5pm. Admission will be £4.50 or £4 for pre-booked coach parties. Flookburgh Silver Band will also be playing a set at 8pm on September 4. Light refreshments will be available during the festival and parking is available in the village. THE award-winning Maia singers will be performing the concert September Songs at Cartmel Priory. The choir will sing a range of music from the Shakespeare Songs by William Mathias to Three times a lady by Lionel Richie. You can join the singers at Cartmel Priory on September 11, at 8pm. Tickets are priced at £6 for adults and £3 for students and children and can be purchased on the door.
MILLOM Arts Society will be holding its annual art exhibition from Saturday until Sunday. Members of the society will be exhibiting their works in oils and watercolours together with craftsmen making wooden objects and artists who paint on glass. The exhibition will be open daily 10am to 7pm at St George's Hall, Lapstone Road, Millom.
STORTH Entertainers' latest performance will be Alan Ayckbourn's Confusions. Directed by David Sorrell, the 16-strong cast will be covering five playlets from Tuesday, September 7 until Saturday, September 11, curtain up at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 and can be booked by contacting 015395-63308 (day) and 01524-761903 (evenings).
CONTEMPORARY jazz is returning on a regular basis to Zefferellis, in Ambleside. The new caf bar in Compston Road will be host to Djangology on Saturday. The band comprises two guitarists, a double bass and a violin. Admission is free and the gig starts at 8pm.
