HOMEGROWN music makers are going head to head in Kendal's very own battle of the bands.

Organised by the owner of Kendal music bar Dickie Doodles, Shaun Bainbridge, the event sees eight bands in the play-off and a £1,000 PA system up for grabs.

Teenage punk rockers Cacophony have already taken on and defeated The Riffs while the Doodleshire Death Squad and heavy metal rockers Calefaction are set to do battle on September 2.

Arnside's Call of Duty take on 5000 BC on September 9 and Zenith go up against Kendal teens Unreliable Sin - who have just released their new EP Wasted Days - on September 16.

The event, which has grown from the bar's jam nights and is designed to showcase local talent, has seen judging panels scrapped and power handed over to the people.

"I know a lot of people don't think it's fair when it's left down to a panel of judges," explained Shaun. "This way, when people come along, they'll be given a scorecard and we'll add up the points at the end of the night - the crowd will decide."

Semi-finals will be held on September 30 and October 7 after which the two remaining bands will be given a night each to convince the crowds - on October 14 and 21.

The band with the most points lifts both the Battle of the Bands crown and the PA system donated by Orton's Mad Monks Music.
