A SLEEPY South Lakeland village is bracing itself for a rude awakening as punk veterans the UK Subs prepare to play.

Milnthorpe may seem like an unusual destination for the punk legends but organisers say the Bank Holiday Monday gig is creating quite a stir.

"We've been getting lots of calls from across the area so it should be a very good night," said promoter Carl Swinnerton. "I think it's a bit of a novelty for people having a punk band playing somewhere like Milnthorpe it's not exactly what you would expect."

He added: "People have been getting in touch from Barrow and Lancaster to find out about it so we're hoping to attract a crowd of about 100."

Led by the indefatigable godfather of punk Charlie Harper the Monday night line-up also sees Alan Campbell on guitar, Brian Barnes on bass and Jay on drums..

Inspired by The Damned and The Sex Pistols, the UK Subs formed in 1976 and scored several hit singles and recorded sessions with Radio One DJ John Peel.

Between 79-81, the punk outfit had seven consecutive UK top 30 hits with the likes of Stranglehold and Tomorrow's Girls and gained a world-wide reputation with their non-stop touring.

So, 25 years and several line-up changes later, the regular faces at Morecambe's punk festival head for the Milnthorpe Memorial Institute supported by Lancaster band The Filthy Lookers.
