That sensational wizard of the violin, Marat Bisengaliev, graces the region with his playing next Saturday (May 15, 7.30pm) at Kendal's Westmorland Hall, as soloist for the Westmorland Orchestra's summer concert. The charismatic Russian returns for his third appearance with conductor Barry Sharkey and his accomplished players, demonstrating his remarkable virtuoso skills and intense musicality in Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs) by Saraste and Fritz Kreisler's transcription of Paganini's Violin Concerto No 1. Both halves of the concert open with overtures by Danish composers - William Shakespeare, by 19th century composer Friedrich Kuhlau, focusing on the dramatist's early life, and Maskerade, penned by Carl Neilsen, an early 20th century composer, best known for his symphonic works. Messager's delightful suite of French ballet music, and Karelia, by Sibelius, full of Finnish patriotic fervour, complete what promises to be another wonderful Westmorland concert. Tickets £9/ £8/ children £4.50 and £4 available from the hall's box office on 01539-729702 or orchestra members.
