A GROUP of 40 youngsters from around South Lakeland gathered to perfect their musical pitch, reports Ruth Lythe.
The event was organised by youth organisation Young Cumbria and brought together musicians between the ages of 13 and 17 for a day of musical workshops.
Participants were invited to try out and perfect a variety of skills including guitar playing, drumming and song writing.
Organiser Liz Cornford, of Young Cumbria, explained: "This is the first event of its kind we are running. It is something that young people in the area are desperate for. It is easy to get involved in this kind of thing if you have some money behind you. These workshops are free and give everybody the opportunity to take part."
The event was advertised among youth groups in the area and anybody, aged 13-17 and interested in music, was invited to have a go. Most of the day was spent learning new skills under the guidance of expert teachers.
Song writing tutor Robin Gibbons said: "This day is a good way of building up young people's confidence in their writing - so if they want to play in bands they can do so."
Among the workshop participants was 16-year-old guitarist Richard Wilson. "I have been playing in bands for a few years and I hope this workshop will help me improve," he said.
Young Cumbria is planning similar events for the Easter Holidays and details will be advertised in youth clubs nearer the time. Watch this space.
