GIGGING and bedroom guitarists from around the region descended on the newly extended Mad Monks Music shop in Orton last Wednesday to hear New York six string genius Matt Smith (left) demonstrate Ovation guitars.
Far from pushing the brand down everyone's 22 Fret neck, the singer songwriter gave a practical masterclass in open tuning and slide guitar. Both novice and more experienced musicians came away from the night with a flight case full of new techniques to practise at home. Some, like me, also came away 20 lighter after buying Matt's CD album's Black and White (1998) and his most recent and aptly named release Big Fun.
Matt was later joined on the new stage by his friend, Pete Templeman, another highly talented guitarist from the North East of England - and our own Gerry Gillard also made an appearance.
Watch out for further events at Mad Monks. In just 18 short months the store has more than doubled in size and, with the addition of the stage, it's obvious the lads don't just want your credit card, they want to hear you play.
