PRINTS rooted in representational drawing and painting, but semi-abstract and colourist in nature - Abbot Hall Art Gallery Coffee Shop is staging a splendid show of former Kendal College lecturer Mark Huit’s most recent work.
Interesting art it is too. I particularly like his Flower Icons series - green, blue and hosta. On the opposite wall Heat is exactly that – a warm, glowing screenprint on wood.
His individual pieces often form component parts which can stand alone or be combined together in groups, and his capacity to focus on detail isolates the essential and symbolic qualities often found in religious icons.
Penrith-based artist Mark Huit (pictured above) was born in 1960 and studied printmaking at Camberwell School of Art, in London. He was born in Bromley but now lives and works in Cumbria.
During his several years at Kendal College he lectured in printmaking, painting and life drawing, but now works full-time at his Penrith studio, pursuing printmaking for the unique effects and textures the process allows him to create.
Altogether, the 17 impressive and engaging examples of Mark’s work look really good gracing the Kendal gallery’s coffee shop walls.
End Game runs until December 24.
