The audience was taken on a stimulating musical journey during Lebanese flautist Wissam Boustany’s ‘In Search of Inspiration’ concert, the spectacular finale to a masterclass weekend with Suzanne de Lozey’s Flutes & Co.
Wissam’s interpretation of music and life have been strongly influenced by his experience of civil war, which he uses to impassion both students and audience.
His opening composition ‘and the Whispering Wind’ showcased his remarkable musical agility, invoking real imagery of the playful element. Listeners travelled with the wind, crossing foreign borders with ease and anticipation. A truly refreshing piece.
Masterclass participants Katie Nelson and Meera Maharaj gave elegant and engaging performances, whilst Kendal’s Libby Gibson offered a remarkably passionate, personal recital from memory. Truly inspirational!
Flautists from all over the country performed together, with instruments ranging from piccolo to contra-bass flute. Resulting harmonies were surprising in texture, achieving a delicate balance and rich tapestry of sound suggestive of a full orchestra.
Wissam continued with subtly emotive interpretations of Hindemith and Dutilleux, before joining Suzanne with a hauntingly beautiful Uebayashi duet.
Highly polished accompaniment was provided throughout by pianist Brenda Blewett from Chethams.
Congratulations to all for the creativity and enthusiasm behind such an enjoyable evening.
