Ulverston author Gill Nicholson gave us a copy of her self-published war-time autobiography for review. Jean Cowgill, from our pool of New Authors reviewers files this review.
A short autobiography that covers, in the main, the period before the Second World War, wartime experiences and later reflections. The title is taken from a mirror game that Gill played as a child. The autobiography reflects her life and the mirror is a sustainable theme throughout the writing.
Gill has been brave enough to describe her family warts and all'. Many writers who attempt autobiographies sanitise the happenings within their families. Or else it is over emphasised in an attempt at cathartic healing. Gill describes her mother's remoteness and her father's infidelity.
Details of garden playgrounds and other children are well described.
I would have preferred more description of childhood happenings and rather than extended details of her family.
The Mirror Game is available from The Tinners' Rabbit bookstore in Ulverston.
