THIS meticulously researched book has been released to mark the 75th birthday of the Friends of the Lake District.

John Cousins traces the history of the area from 1760, via the conservation group’s establishment in 1934 and its campaigning for national park status, to the creation of the Lake District National Park in 1951. Aside from historic maps and sketches, it includes a collection of photos from the 1930s and archived posters and campaigning material.

A worthwhile read for anyone interested in the people who played a crucial role in the Lake District’s history.
