A LAKES country house is having its 'time to shine' after scooping prestigious awards for its hotel and restaurant.

Sawrey House Country Hotel, at Near Sawrey, has been awarded a Rosette for Culinary Excellence plus a three star rating from AA.

Nestled in the idyllic heart of the Lake District near Hawkshead, the hotel was visited by a 'mystery shopper' who tested the full guest experience.

"It was part of our plan for the business to get the star rating which has been a long term aim for us," said David Bulmer. "Now we've achieved it we're delighted."

Refurbished five years ago, the converted country house has a fine dining restaurant with a 'relaxed atmosphere' and an 'informal formality'.

And in June, Sawrey House introduced head chef Ashley Wood.

"Our food is fresh and local with a modern twist," said David. "We do some traditional dishes in a modern style."

Diners can enjoy afternoon tea, Sunday lunch or choose from the restaurant menu which includes the likes of rillette of smoked eel, pan seared grey mullet and terrine of tiramisu.

Although David has been the owner since December 2009, he said this was the hotel's 'time to shine' after 'chipping away' for five years.

"We just do great friendly attentive, none intrusive service. We welcome everybody and really look after them,"he added. "We're a busy little hotel and one of the reasons we wanted the Rosette was to get the local trade in.

"It's out opportunity to sing and dance about the hotel and restaurant."

Having just missed out on their second Rosette, the team have been 'spurred' on to go for number two.

"We were hoping for the one and when we found out we literally missed the second we were a bit disappointed - it was bitter sweet!" he said.
