SONIC Saturdays break new ground for Sedbergh Music Festival with cutting edge concerts using electronics and improvisation.
Multi-media man Andi Chapple is among those pushing back the boundaries of sound, devised a number of installations and site-specific group performances which feature throughout the 17-day festival.
The Sedbergh graphic designer, sound artist, composer and DJ, has put together a Month of Sundays, creating a sonic portrait of St Andrew’s Church and its place in the town, running in church from 10am-5pm daily, from Saturday (June 5) as well as prior to concerts.
Meanwhile, on June 5 the festival’s Sonic Saturdays opens with Mayming, Seaming To (vocals) and Semay Wu (cellist), one of the North West’s innovative and inspiring acts. Both are from a classically trained background and their music is apparently charged with a variety of influences, forging a highly experimental, cinematic and evocative sound.
Jonathan Coleclough’s Sonic Saturday transforms the delicate sounds of everyday objects into mysterious and sensuous music at Westwoods Books on June 12 (1pm) with Andi staging an outdoor performance later the same day (3.30pm) at St Andrew’s Church, involving the church’s bell ringers and his usual collaborators in a mix of acoustic and electronic sound.
Finally, June 19’s ‘sonic session’ at St Andrew’s (1pm) is Vox Novus’s 60x60, containing 60 works, each 60 seconds long, from 60 different composers.
