FUTURE teachers are receiving first-rate training at one of the county's top further education establishments, OFSTED inspectors have ruled.
Both primary and secondary teacher training courses at St Martin's College campuses in Ambleside, Lancaster and Carlisle were awarded the highest grade achievable after a series of inspections during the 2004/2005 academic year.
The proportion of trainees awarded qualified teacher status in 2003 was higher than the national average with the majority going on to find suitable employment after completing their course.
The report also highlighted the firm commitment from the college to widen participation in teacher education found in its recruitment strategies and admissions policies.
Dr Neil Simco, dean of the faculty of education, said the findings were a positive and welcome endorsement of the hard work of his colleagues and students.
"These reports show we earn our reputation and that our students receive the best training available to start a career in teaching.
"The fact that the majority of our trainees find suitable employment following graduation shows that St Martin's students can graduate with the confidence that they will find the career of their choice."
The college, which was founded in 1964, was also commended for its physical education course which is now considered to be among the best in the country.
Trainees on the course were praised for taking a professional approach to teaching and their commitment to raising standards.
