A HIGH-pitched noise deterrent that can only be heard by young ears is being used to tackle anti-social behaviour problems at an Eden sports club.
A device called a Mosquito will be installed at Appleby Cricket Club to stop gangs of youths gathering and causing noise and litter problems.
PC Dave Mattinson, Cumbria Police’s community officer in Appleby, said that the club has had problems with youngsters over the past two and a half years.
“This year when the clocks went back I had a look and it was just horrendous. There were great long lines of bottles, cartons of beers, chip papers. It was unbelieveable,” he said.
The device, which costs around £460 and will be funded by the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, will be fitted to the club shortly.
The Mosquito works by emitting a high-pitched buzzing noise that causes dicomfort to young ears, usually under the age of 25, but cannot be heard by adults.
“It has worked in other areas so hopefully it will deter youths off there,” said PC Mattinson.
