The body responsible for the national registry of UK flags has formally registered a flag for the historic county of Westmorland.
After lobbying by the Westmorland Association, the Flag Institute has given the thumbs up for the flag - which is based on the banner of arms of the former Westmorland County Council.
It’s hoped that the new flag will become a recognised symbol for the South Lakes, adorning buildings and merchandise, being displayed at county events and adopted by the county’s sports teams, much as the St Andrew’s Cross does in Scotland.
Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron, said: “I’d like to congratulate the Westmorland Association for successfully registering the flag.
"I hope that it will be enthusiastically adopted by all of us who are lucky enough to live and work in this amazing area. I look forward to seeing it flying high when I am travelling around the South Lakes!”
