MONTHS of curiosity will come to an end this weekend as the first house in one of Kendal’s most historic pub sites is unveiled.

Russell Armer Homes’ £2.6 million development at the Cock and Dolphin sees plot 10 open for viewing and interest is expected to be high.

As work continues on the 18 yard-style mix of houses and apartments, passers-by have regularly stopped to view progress.

While the current pub dates back to around 1900, the original 17th century building is thought to have links with a London Cock and Dolphin hostelry.

According to historian Roger Bingham, the two could have been destinations in an ancient packhorse route.

For centuries, it was the town’s most southerly alehouse. Mr Bingham says although the title comes from two separate Kendal establishments its French connections are intriguing.

The royal family’s emblem included a cockerel and dolphin could have originally been ‘dauphin’, the king’s eldest son.

Rich history is combined with contemporary twists in nine two and three bedroom houses, six apartments in the old pub and three in a new wing.

With views over the river and castle, plot 10 is open on April 2 and 3, showing how Kendal’s traditional residential yards are themed in the clever design.

Russell Armer’s managing director, Martyn Nicholson, said the development’s position had everything to recommend it.

He explained: “It’s got it all, history, amazing location - a stone’s throw from the town centre and all it amenities - affordable, top quality and will hopefully give scope to some first-time buyers.

“In view of the interest levels so far, we are expecting a good turn out this weekend, particularly as the view house is priced at £169,950.”

Plot 10 will be open from 11am to 5.00pm. For further information www.russell-armer.co.uk, 01539 724282.
