A DALES shepherdess who has abandoned her boots in favour of walking barefoot is now offering to share her experiences with others.
Alison O’Neill, a working shepherdess and walking guide based at Shacklabank Farm, near Sedbergh, has walked barefoot through the Howgills for years and is now encouraging visitors who stay at her farm for walking holidays to do the same.
Her collection of Barefoot Walks, which are between five and ten miles, cover various terrains to allow people to feel a range of textures.
A typical walk takes in meadows, ferns, bluebell woods, streams and across mossy banks, and Mrs O’Neill believes this helps people to better connect with nature.
“Barefoot walking helps us slow down and appreciate the natural world more, giving time to time.
"The body feels amazing following a barefoot walk and guests cannot believe how relaxed and liberated they feel,” she said.
She believes that walking in boots simply allows people to walk over the land without truly experiencing the bio-diversity.
“In a way, it makes you feel vulnerable, which adds to the awe that you feel when taking in the stunning natural world all around,” she said.
