KENDAL could be getting a new 1,000 capacity gig venue following a ‘one-off’ event next month.
A warehouse space at ‘The Factory’ development at Canal Head has been revealed as the venue for a homecoming gig by chart-toppers British Sea Power.
The Brewery Arts Centre, which is planning the event, has been granted licensing permission for a one-off show on November 8.
But if the concert goes to plan, the building could play host to more events in the future.
“It would completely depend on how this show goes and what events come in throughout the year,” said Brewery Chief Executive Richard Foster.
“The leisure centre can hold 1,000 people but the British Sea Power gig needed a particular kind of venue – because there’s a brass band involved and they wanted an industrial feel.
“I knew that the site of the old Goodacres Carpets Factory was being redeveloped so I contacted the people in charge to see if they were interested in working with us.”
The ‘Sea of Brass’ show will mark the first time BSP have played in their hometown for several years.
It will be the last stop on a tour that will see them revisiting their songbook of the last ten years in collaboration with Fodens Brass Band.
The show was announced in May but the venue has been kept under wraps until now while organisers waited for licensing permission.
“It’s going to be an amazing gig – we’re down to our last few tickets and people have bought them without knowing what the venue is,” Mr Foster said.
“It’s a great opportunity to do something different and show people another side to Kendal.”
A pop-up bar will be set up for one night only in the building, but there will be no on-site parking for the public, with gig-goers encouraged to use other car parks in the town.
The announcement is the latest to come from The Factory development, which is intended to be a ‘cultural hub’ for the town with workspace for artists and businesses, studios, galleries and performance space.
The site consists of the former Goodacre Carpets Factory and other buildings which are in various stages of construction.
The three people behind the venture are Mealbank Estates property developer Paul Proctor, director of Cactus Creative Andy Smith and Julie Tait, director of Kendal Arts International.
