TWO people have been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after the car they were travelling in collided with a bus.

Police were called to the A684, between Kendal and Sedbergh, at 12.36pm today.

A 41-year-old male driver and his 49-year-old male passenger, travelling in a yellow open top Caterham Seven sports car, have both been airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital with serious leg and chest injuries.

An ambulance spokeswoman said both men were fully alert and their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The bus involved was a blue 52-seater coach from Germany with 32 people onboard. All, including the driver, were not injured.

Three fire engines from Kendal used specialist cutting and stabilising equipment to release the casualties from the car.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or seen the vehicles prior to the incident are asked to contact Cumbria Police on 101 and ask for PC 1639  Steve Wilson of the Kendal Roads Policing Unit.
