KIRKBY Stephen Market Place will host the first of a series of new seasonal markets Friday.

A range of fine cheeses, meats, vegetables, preserves, fish, breads and cakes will be served up between 9am and 2pm. The market has been organised by Crosby Ravensworth Food Alliance - a newly-formed group of local food producers who are committed to providing high quality foods to individuals and businesses locally.

The work of the Food Alliance is backed by the Country Land and Business Association's 'Just Ask' campaign, which encourages customers to ask producers where their food comes from - a matter very close to the heart of many Cumbrian consumers.

Stalls will be re-stocked throughout the day so that visitors who call in after work will not be disappointed.

"We want the market to create a reason for people to come into Kirkby Stephen and for it to have a beneficial knock-on effect for local businesses as well," said a Food Alliance spokesperson.

"We'd really like to build this event up into a regular and popular high quality food experience over time."
